Hand shapes: earth, air, fire and water in palmistry
Before looking at a single line, a reading starts with the overall shape of the hand. That shape sets the register in which everything else is read.
The four main types
The most common classification crosses two simple measurements: is the palm square or elongated, and are the fingers short or long relative to it?
- Earth hand — square palm, short fingers: concrete, enduring, needs tangible results.
- Air hand — square palm, long fingers: mental, curious, needs to understand before committing.
- Fire hand — elongated palm, short fingers: impulse, initiative, struggles with slowness.
- Water hand — elongated palm, long fingers: sensitivity, intuition, permeable to atmospheres.
What texture adds
Supple skin is read as adaptability; firm skin, as constancy. A thick hand is read as a need for the concrete, a fine hand as a more nervous way of functioning.
Why shape comes before lines
The same straight head line does not read the same on a water hand and on an earth hand. On the first, it tempers an overflowing sensitivity; on the second, it reinforces an already marked rigour.
That is why a reading made from a photo asks for the whole palm, laid flat — not a close-up of one line.
