Birth chart: what it contains and how to read it

The three basic markers

Almost everyone knows their sun sign. It is the most visible, but far from the most personal: it changes roughly every month, so a twelfth of humanity shares it with you.

What makes a chart unique are the other two markers — and above all their combination.

• ✦The Sun — what you reach towards, what you are trying to become.
• ✦The Moon — what you need in order to feel safe. It changes sign every two and a half days.
• ✦The Rising sign — how you walk into a room. It changes every two hours: without a birth time, it cannot be calculated.

The houses: where it plays out

The twelve houses divide the sky according to the time and place of birth. They do not say what, but where: the fourth house speaks of home and roots, the tenth of work and public exposure, the seventh of partnerships.

This division is why two people born on the same day in two different places do not live their charts the same way.

Aspects: how the planets talk to each other

A chart is not read planet by planet but through the angles they form. A conjunction merges two energies, a square puts them in tension, a trine lets them flow easily.

Tensions are not bad news: in symbolic reading, they are often what moves a life forward, where ease tends to lull.

What if I do not know my birth time?

The Sun and most planets can still be calculated from the date alone. What becomes impossible is the Rising sign and the division into houses.

In that case an honest reading says so and leaves those parts out, rather than inventing a plausible Rising sign. The time is usually recorded on the full birth certificate.

What a birth chart does not do

It does not predict dated events, does not say who you will meet, and replaces no medical, legal or psychological advice. It is a symbolic reading grid — useful for understanding yourself, not for submitting to it.
